I live in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, and cross the border at Nogales regularly. These are the questions everyone asks me, answered the way I'd answer them across a table — specific to my town, my roads, and my experience. Not a travel guide. Not the whole country.

The fine print, up front

Everything on these pages is true — for me. I've lived in Mexico for twenty years. I know where to shop, I know what a fair price is, and I know when someone's quoting me the gringo price. When I suspect I'm getting it anyway, I'll admit my solution: I send my wife, who's Mexican, and the price comes back to earth. If you show up fresh with a Tucson accent and no Spanish, your numbers will not be my numbers — at least not for a while. Same goes if you don't have U.S. insurance and U.S. income backing the big stuff; my setup works because of that split.

# prices and exchange rates reflect my personal experience as of july 2026, at roughly 17.50 MXN/USD. recalculate before you trust the numbers.
